Re: Stan Lazaridis
When the ball came to him on the touch line it was genuinely 50/50 whether he would control it or whether it would go out of play. Definitely had something about him mind and on his day was superb

Re: Stan Lazaridis
that Newcastle away goal was one of the best goals I've ever seen live.

Still remember the papers being very specific that he was "37 yards" out.

was one of my first away games, I was about 13.

Re: Stan Lazaridis
At the time he was the modern day Harry Redknapp on the wing, crap for 7 or 8 games but mustard in 2 which got him picked for 7 or 8 games ;-). In other words, no consistency ever.

That is where Tore, Valencia and Zaza are so much better. Ver, very consistent.

Pre-season friendly up at Oxford just after he'd signed. Announcer reads out the teams. When he says Stan Lazaridis, bloke next to me turns and asks, "Who the fuck is that?"

Sounds a bit like Antonio Ron son.

Remember a bloke in the BML that used to just shout... "STAN-LEYYYYY STAN-LEYYYY"... for about 10 mins.. no one joined in...

Re: Stan Lazaridis
He was quick, loved a dribble, but wasn't technically very good. Was a better wing back than he was a left winger. Cracking goal at Newcastle.

p.s Surprised to see a lot of Anti OS'ers / Uber fans not have any memories of him.... funny that.

Re: Stan Lazaridis
I was working out in Perth Australia. I was woken up after a night out on the lash at about 11am by the postman dropping the local newspaper through the letterbox.

I pick up said newspaper and do a double take because West Ham were all over the back page. Reading on, I see that the mighty hammers are on a pre-season tour of Oz and are playing in Perth. "Great! When is that" I think.
"Bugger! today in 40mins in a part of town I've never heard of" I realise as I read on. I'll never make it in time. Curse this pre-internet age where the only info from home was the world service and 2 day old newspapers.

I look up this strange part of town and low and behold it is only 30mins walk. I throw on some clothes and stroll over the pitch where I arrive just at kick-off.
Skippy played left wing and absolutely ran the show. Every time he got the ball it looked like he was going to score and it didn't take him long to run half the length of the pitch and slot one in the corner.
He came off at half time to a standing ovation.

"Blimey that was lucky I caught that" I thought as I strolled home after meeting Harry and the players.

Then I went back to the pub. Happy Days.

Re: Stan Lazaridis
I remember him breaking his leg in a home cup game v Grimsby (dire 1-1 draw, we lost up there in the replay 3-0) when nobody else was around him at all. Just collapsed in a heap after a shot. My Dad still talks about that to this day.

Wasn't he involved in a drugs scandal back in Oz a few years back?

Re: Stan Lazaridis
I'm pretty sure I first saw him play at Peterborough away in a friendly, may even have been his debut. I remember thinking he looked quick and decent player.
I was also at Newcastle when he scored that belter!
Superb player, put him alongside likes of etherington, Sinclair and Michael Hughes in terms of wingers.

Re: Stan Lazaridis
His best game was away at Forest (0-2 with 10 men circa 96) Great day that and Stan had the full back time and time again

Re: Stan Lazaridis
My memory of him is a player that looked very busy and on it but never actually did much. Obviously I remember his goal at Newcastle and from memory some mazy runs. Always seems an honest guy though and gave his all.

Re: Stan Lazaridis
This is True Story if not a bizarre one.

I lived down a cul-de-sac and at the top of my road, was a B&B. Anyway I drove home one night and some chap is walking his dog at the top of the road.

The dog then promptley did his business at the top of my road, so I wound down the window and start saying to the dog walker, Oi are you going to clean that shit up!

I then get a response from this Aussie chap, 'ah sorry mate, I am just walking the B&B's owners dog and don't have anything to clear up with.

I then clocked the Aussie's fella face and it turned out to be Stan Lazaridis.

Realised who he was and got chatting to him and turned out he was staying at the B&B, as he was having some treatment at Lilleshall down the road.

Nice chap, but was a very bizarre situation to be in!

Newcastle away - belter from 35 yards out and winning 2 pens on his debut v Everton

Re: Stan Lazaridis
I had picture taken with Lazaridis at the Epping Forest Country club - showing my age now..

I also remember having a season ticket in the Chicken Run ( in the days when it was close to the pitch). And some bloke behind me used to always shout out when there was a black player about " Go on Stan, get the abbo!!”

Of course that’s bang out of order , However, I couldn’t help but chuckle…
